Pay TV operator MultiChoice is set to add three channels based in the north of Nigeria, Liberty, Tozali and Rahama, to its platform.

The move comes as part of an agreement between MultiChoice Nigeria with representatives from the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG).

This agreement was struck after the CNG submitted a petition calling for a boycott of MultiChoice services in the northern region.

According to media publication Broadcast Media Africa, the petition accused MultiChoice, the owner and operator of pay TV platform DStv, of not featuring northern-based TV channels on its platform and also not embracing content diversity geared towards national growth and development to benefit to the region.

CNG spokesman Abdul-Azeez Suleiman said: “MultiChoice is committed to considering additional eligible and interested northern-based television channels on its DStv platform. The current situation with MultiChoice is due to a lack of credible communication in the languages understood by natives.” Suleiman also urged MultiChoice to assist in bridging this perceived communication gap.
