Animated action comedy Tonko, created and directed by South African artist Terence Maluleke, has been selected for the Cartoon Forum 2024 conference in Toulouse, France, in September.

Tonko (26×22’) is described as a heartfelt story about a young boy’s journey of self-discovery through an ancient family legacy. Tonko used to hide his insecurities behind a digital mask of gaming and social media, but when he is sent to his aunt’s village for the summer, he discovers an ancient family mask that allows him to transform into his ancestors and harness their mystical superpowers.

Aimed at kids aged between six and nine, the series was developed by writers Raffaella Delle Donne, Tshepo Moche and Marc Dey and is being produced by South African toon studio Triggerfish via its Irish arm. It will be presented to industry professionals in Toulouse from September 16-19.

Cartoon Forum is a pitching and coproduction forum for animated TV projects. Producers will have the opportunity to pitch their project in front of hundreds of broadcasters, investors and other potential partners from 40 countries.
