Nigerian filmmaker James Amuta (Nightfall in Lagos, Collision Course) has begun production on his new ocean adventure movie When the Monsters Come Out.
The film is set against the backdrop of the exotic islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Described as an ambitious revenge movie, it follows a young lady who must face her greatest fear.
Produced in collaboration with the Trinidad & Tobago Film Company (FilmTT), When the Monsters Come Out will showcase Nigeria and the Caribbean Islands and present film talents from two countries that share a lot in common, according to its backers.
Amuta said: “Thank you FilmTT for hosting me. It was nice meeting and working with my creative cousins. We can’t wait to share what we cooked up with the world.
“I’ve always been a firm believer in collaboration, and this international coproduction filmed on location on the magical islands of Trinidad and Tobago goes to prove my commitment to my belief that film is a universal language. And once you’ve attained a certain level of visual fluency, you can tell universally relevant stories, set in any part of this beautiful earth.
“Let’s open up our imagination and embrace possibilities. And remember, if you want to shoot, shoot, and don’t talk! Let’s get to work. Let’s collaborate some more. This is perhaps one of the more ambitious films I’ve ever written. This is by far one of the more exciting film projects I’ve ever embarked on. I’m so excited to begin the journey of When the Monsters Come Out.”
According to the filmmaker, casting for the movie is still ongoing. “Nigeria meets the Caribbean Islands and, for the first time, I’m presenting a protagonist that I’ve described playfully as the female John Wick or Uma Thurman’s character of The Bride in Kill Bill,” he added.
Amuta has produced six major films, including human-trafficking-focused Netflix original Oloture. He also wrote and produced Collision Course, also on Netflix, and coproduced Elesin Oba: The King’s Horseman, a Netflix film adapted from Wole Soyinka’s 1975 play Death & the King’ss Horseman.
He is perhaps best known for his documentary film Nightfall in Lagos, which was nominated for the best documentary film at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2018.
