WapTV named TV Channel of the Year

Nigerian family entertainment channel WapTV has been named the outstanding indigenous TV channel of the year at the 2022 edition of the Marketing Edge Awards, which took place this month in Lagos.

The news comes shortly after the channel received awards for the Best Family Entertainment TV Channel at the Kaduna International Film Festival, and Indigenous TV Station of the Year at the Top Society Man of the Year Awards.

Wale Adenuga, MD of WapTV, said: “We are nothing without our viewers. When we became the first TV channel with presenters speaking 100% Pidgin English, it was out of a need to reach the majority of Nigerians across various educational levels, socio-economic classes, language and other differences.

“We appreciate the millions of viewers who watch our channel on satellite TV daily, as well as the over 500,000 subscribers on our YouTube channel – waptvchannel – which accumulates over 2.8 million views monthly.”

WapTV airs on DStv 262, StarTimes 116, GOtv 102, FreeTV 751, Play 275, MyTV and shows the best of TV dramas, comedy series, Nigerian movies (English, Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa), reality shows, events, music videos, celebrity interviews, cooking shows, religious broadcasts, educational content, talkshows and entertainment news.

WapTV receives YouTube award

YouTube has awarded family entertainment satellite TV network WapTV the Silver Play Button Award after its YouTube channel achieved the milestone of 100,000 subscribers.

Wole Adenuga, WapTV’s MD, said: “We appreciate every one of our 130,000 Subscribers on YouTube. We are equally grateful to YouTube for this award as a recognition of the quality of our content. While we continue to have millions of viewers watching WapTV on live TV via satellite, the YouTube channel helps us satisfy audiences who want to re-watch something they have already seen on TV, as well as those who prefer the video-on-demand method of consuming content.”

WapTV’s YouTube channel is free and gives subscribers unlimited access to thousands of programmes including Papa Ajasco, This Life, Superstory, Nnenna & Friends and Binta My Daughter.

It is available across Nigeria and other parts of Africa on all major satellite TV platforms, on DStv 262, StarTimes 116, GOtv 102, StarSat 189, PlayTV 275, TStv 223 and MyTV.

Play TV adds to channel line-up

Nigerian cable network Play TV has added four channels to its pay platform, with plans to add two more later this month.

Play has upgraded its channel list to include 24-hour African comedy channel 1 Comedy, Germankids’ cartoon channel Fix & Foxi and two Indian channels, Colors and Rishtey.

1 Comedy airs on channel 291 while Colors, Rishtey and Fix & Foxi air on channels 290, 295 and 505 respectively. Fix & Foxi is owned by Munich-based Your Family Entertainment, while the two Indian nets are owned by Viacom18 of Mumbai.

Play will also add two more channels, African movie channel Aforevo TV and entertainment news service WapTV, this month.

Recently, 1 Comedy was in the news after it announced it will give content creators the opportunity to have their comedy skits air for free on the channel.

Play TV, formerly known as ConSat, has more than 50 channels, some of which are exclusive to the network, such as HFA TV, 1 Comedy, 1 Music and Irawo.
