NigComSat inks deal with Turksat

Telecoms company Nigerian Communication Satellite (NigComSat) and Turkish satellite firm Turksat have signed an agreement to provide satellite services in Nigeria.

Weeks after NigComSat began talks with Turksat, the two companies have agreed to a partnership that will ensure the provision of satellite infrastructure, technical communications training and content creation and development.

In March, NigComSat executive director of marketing Samson Osagie disclosed that both organisations were contemplating the possibility of reaching an agreement to expand the reach of their platforms by exchanging content.

Both agencies recently signed a memorandum of understanding in Turkey. The Nigerian delegation to Ankara was led by executive director of technical services Kazeem Raji, while Hasan Ertok, VP, led the Turksat group.

Adamu Idris, NigComSat’s head of public affairs, said: “This new collaboration is expected to allow both operators to use their resources and specific expertise to provide new and innovative satellite-based solutions.

“It is expected to meet government interest in broadband penetration in every part of Nigeria, including other parts of the world where its footprints are visible.”

NigComSat hopes to use the agreement to expand its satellite footprint and to allow customers to leverage bandwidths on the satellite infrastructure of both companies.

Established in 1990, Turksat is the sole satellite operator in Turkey, while NigComSat became the first communications satellite operator and service provider in Africa when it launched in 2007. Last December, NigComSat launched its direct-to-home service, with more than 40 free-to-air channels.
