Nigerian feature film Strawberry Chinny has been selected to screen at the 2024 Essence Film Festival in New Orleans, which takes place in the US from July 4 to 7.

The film is directed by Cheta Chukwu (Payday, Deranged) and produced by Kele, Ngozi Okafor and Chimezie Imo. It stars Genoveva Umeh, Modola Osifuwa and Obehi Aburime, among others.

Strawberry Chinny is produced by Imo’s new prodco Vox Cinematic Films and Nigerian film collective Dreamboat Pictures, where Chukwu is a director.

The film tells the story of an irrational and heartbroken make-up artist who, after being dumped by her boyfriend, navigates a complicated living arrangement with her best friend.

Imo said: “Strawberry Chinny is my debut feature film as a producer from my newly formed production company Vox Cinematic Films. To have it selected at the Essence Film Festival feels like a step in the right direction for my company.”

The Essence Film Festival is known for showcasing projects by black storytellers across the African diaspora.
