Reuters appoints Zavis for Africa

International news agency Reuters has appointed former newspaper journalist Alexandra Zavis as its bureau chief for Africa.

Alexandra Zavis

Zavis has previously worked at The Los Angeles Times, reporting from Canada, Mexico, Syria and the Philippines. She will be bringing her years of expertise as she prepares to lead an African newsgathering team that has grown in the last 18 years.

She started her career in 1994 at a South African newspaper after which she joined the Associated Press (AP) and engaged in reporting from countries including Liberia, Sierra Leone, Congo, Sudan, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Zavis became an editor in New York before moving to Africa to report war, politics, economics, culture and peace-making. She served as the AP’s news editor in Johannesburg and gained coverage of the US invasion of Iraq.

Simon Robinson, regional editor for Reuters, EMEA, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Alexandra to the Reuters family. She takes charge of a team that has never been in better shape and I relish her continuing to drive the changes to make our coverage of the African continent even stronger.”

Zavis said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining Reuters in Africa. This will be a return to my journalistic roots, and I look forward to working with the talented team there to expand coverage of this complex and dynamic continent.”

The appointment follows recent moves by Reuters to beef up its African coverage. It launched a mobile-first video news service called Africa Journal, as first reported by Content Nigeria, edited by Serena Chaudhry.

Reuters has also included an Africa columnist to its financial commentary service Breakingviews, and has also hired new pan-African reporters in business and mining and acquired more reporters in Johannesburg, Lagos and Nairobi.

Reuters launches new brand identity

International news agency Reuters has unveiled its new brand identity, having changed the name of its financial and risk business unit to Refinitiv.

The move came after a successful partnership deal with a group of investors led by private equity firm Blackstone Group, which now owns 55% of the new business.

The new identity was revealed at the West Africa Excellence Awards, which took place in Lagos recently. The awards recognised financial market participants who had good performances and had made remarkable contributions in society.

Ini Ebong of First Bank Nigeria won the People’s Award; Bola Onadele Koko, MD/CEO at FMDQ Securities Exchange, won the Best Partner Award and the Innovation Awards for embracing disruption with new ideas; Ibukun Oyedeji of Ecobank took home the Most Impactful Business Award; and Jacob Brobbey of Barclays Bank of Ghana won the Embracing Technology Award.

Sneha Shah, MD for Africa at Refinitiv, said: “We are very excited to be bringing the Excellence Awards for the first time in West Africa. What is going to drive the success and growth of our economy is committed individuals and companies that are contributing to strong and stable financial systems and institutions.

“The inaugural 2018 West Africa Excellence Awards will recognise and highlight the great work of individuals and companies who, amongst many outstanding nominees, were selected by the independent judges as the ones producing the most impact for West Africa’s financial markets.”

Dr Okwu Joseph Nnanna, deputy governor of economic policy at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), represented by Dr Alvan Ikoku, said: “Thomson Reuters Refinitiv has been a dependable partner of the CBN and other financial institutions within the West Africa sub-region in developing support for financial products and information.”

Reuters to open Africa Journal

Africa Journal

International news agency Reuters is launching a mobile-first video service called Africa Journal, reflecting the growing digital consumption of news on the continent.

Serena Chaudhry

With the new service, Reuters aims to tell the African story in an unbiased way, covering news locally and globally in daily ready-to-publish English-language video packages.

The service brings fresh news from unique and diverse perspectives, ranging from human interest, entertainment, lifestyle, sports, business, politics and general news. It offers video content to broadcasters, online and mobile platforms as well as publishers.

“Africa Journal is produced with the same ethics and principles used in all Reuters news gathering, which is free from bias or influence and there is no limitation to Africa Journal’s reporting,” Africa Journal editor Serena Chaudhry told Content Nigeria.

“Our Trust Principles clearly state that Reuters provides unbiased and reliable news services to all sources, whether they be newspapers, agencies, broadcasters or other media subscribers. We do not report fake news,” she said.

“Far from showing stereotypical images of Africa suffering only from war or famine, Africa Journal showcases incredible stories from the worlds of science, technology, entrepreneurship as well as political and business elements.”

Thanks to the growth of the digital mobile audience in Africa, launching Africa Journal will not only offer Africans updated content but also give the international market the stories it demands.

Chaudhry added: “Rapid population growth, high levels of mobile penetration and falling data rates are driving an explosion in digital and telco industries. Our content can be used cross-industry, including broadcast, print and digital publishing, technology, telcos, corporates and brands.”

The new service will start by producing between 16 and 20 short voiced packages every week.

“Africa Journal is a commercial service. We offer a 30-day free trial. Pricing is based on various factors including audience size. We offer flexible commercial models to suit news organisations of all sizes,” Chaudhry said.

“Clients can request a free trial to explore how the content will work for their needs. The content is not country-specific. We will comprehensively report the continent of Africa as a whole in its entirety depending on where the story is and offer a unique insight into a myriad of stories about the continent,” she added.

“I’m really excited to be showcasing the latest stories, whether they are in innovation, science or technology. There’s so much happening and it’s such a vibrant and diverse continent, so for me it’s really going home.”

The move follows recent moves by Reuters to beef up its African coverage. Former sub-Saharan Africa bureau chief Ed Cropley was last month re-assigned as the first Breakingviews columnist focusing on Africa, while three new reporters were hired for the sub-Saharan newsdesk in March.
