ZDF Studios to distribute SA’s Legacy

Tshedza Pictures’ Legacy

Germany’s ZDF Studios has acquired the worldwide distribution rights, excluding Africa, Latin America and French-speaking territories, to South African telenovela Legacy.

Legacy (104×45’) was produced by Tshedza Pictures for South African pay TV network M-Net, part of MultiChoice. Written by Gwydion Beynon and Phathutshedzo Makwarela, the SAFTA-winning show premiered in 2020 and ended last year after two seasons.

The series features a diverse cast including Mary-Anne Barlow, Michelle Botes, Dawid Minnaar, Kgomotso Christopher and Siyabong Thwala.

Set in the world of investment banking and billionaires, Legacy centres on a power struggle following the death of a wealthy patriarch and company CEO, with his bitter ex-wife and their ruthless daughter doing whatever it takes to ensure his second wife does not push her playboy son into succeeding him.

After concluding the distribution deal with M-Net Electronic Media Network and DSTV Media Sales, both also part of MultiChoice, ZDF Studios will be taking the series to Cannes event Mipcom this year. Yuliya Fischer, director of drama at the German company, said the South African show “will be one of the key titles on our drama slate” at the event.

Mauro Black, director of content sales and distribution at MultiChoice, added: “The series performed well with audiences in South Africa, and partnering with the highly respected ZDF Studios is going to allow our proudly African content to be enjoyed across the globe.”

Yolisa Phahle, CEO of general entertainment for MultiChoice group, said: “We are excited to once again see most of our shows scoop the bulk of this year’s SAFTA nominations. This is a win for local TV and film and demonstrates MultiChoice Group’s commitment to investing in local content to allow for local stories to be told by Africans.

“The nominations are also a testament to the incredible resilience of all the talent, cast and crew in various productions as our industry navigated the complexities brought on by the global Covid-19 pandemic, which were characterised by production stoppages and a period of uncertainty for many creatives.”

The SAFTAs ceremony will take place on May 22 on Mzansi Magic DStv channel 161 at 19.00.

South Africa’s Legacy end with S2

Legacy is produced by Tshedza Pictures

South African telenovela Legacy will conclude with its second season, which is set to air next year.

Broadcaster M-Net said it had decided to end the show in order to explore new avenues and cater to viewers’ increasing desire for limited series.

Legacy producer Tshedza is scheduled to finish shooting the second season in February next year, with the show ending in September 2022.

Created by executive producers Phatutshedzo Makwarela and Gwidyon Benyon, Legacy focuses on the Price family and the struggle for power over their empire after the death of patriarch Sebastian.

Nomsa Philiso, executive head of programming at M-Net owner MultiChoice Group, said: “Our viewership surveys guide us to adapt our content to the evolving needs of our customers. While Legacy is a popular show, our M-Net 101 customers have indicated that they now want more limited series rather than long-running telenovelas. The success of our local strategy depends on how well we tune into what our customers would like to see on their screens.

“We would like to thank our loyal viewers on M-Net, DStv channel 101 and Showmax and assure them that we have exciting plans for our content for 2022. We will share more news on our local content offering in due course.”

In a joint statement, Makwarela and Beynon, co-owners of Tshedza, added: “Working with M-Net channel 101 has always been a dream for us as a company, and we thank the channel for their incredible support and encouragement in bringing Legacy to life.

“All our writers, crew members and actors have poured their hearts and souls into this project. We applaud MultiChoice Group for continuing to support local content and look forward to working on other exciting projects in the future.”
