Akindele, Daniel, Egbe join Academy

The US-based Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the organisation behind the Oscars, has invited three Nigerian filmmakers to become members.

Funke Akindele Daniel K Daniel and Blessing Egbe are listed among 397 members for this year’s class.

Akindele was named in the actor category for her movies Omo Ghetto: The Saga and Jenifa; Daniel was also named in the actor category for his movies The Fugitive and A Soldier’s Story; and Egbe was named in the director category for her movies African Messiah and Iquo’s Journal.

According to the Academy, these filmmakers have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures and were selected based on professional qualifications, with an ongoing commitment to representation, inclusion and equity.

The Academy celebrates and recognises excellence in filmmaking through the Oscars. In 2021, Nigerian film and TV talent Mo Abudu, Ramsey Nouah and Andrew Dosunmu were invited to join.

Netflix takes Akindele’s Omo Ghetto sequel

Omo Ghetto: The Saga

Global streaming service Netflix will screen Omo Ghetto: The Saga, a Nigerian movie directed and produced by Nollywood actors Funke Akindele and JJC Skillz, from September 10.

The film follows the story of twin sisters leading separate lives but who are reunited by a series of dramatic twists. It is the sequel to 2020’s Omo Ghetto.

Also known as Omo Ghetto 2, the film is a gangster comedy that was released in Nigerian cinemas last Christmas and became the highest growing Nigerian film of 2020

Distributed by Lagos-based Film One Entertainment, the film’s cast includes Funke Akindele-Bello, Chioma Akpotha, Eniola Badmus, Bimbo Thomas, Akah Nnani, Alex Ekubo and Zubby Michael.

“Omo Ghetto: The Saga is coming to Netflix this September. Get ready to experience the Saga all over again,” Akindele announced on Instagram.

SceneOne TV unveils mobile app

Nigerian Nollywood-themed OTT entertainment service SceneOne TV has launched a mobile app.

Funke Akindele, award-winning actress, producer and co-founder of SceneOne TV, revealed the development in an Instagram post and encouraged viewers to subscribe to the VoD service.

SceneOne TV offers premium entertainment including a range of Nollywood movies and TV series.

Akindele and her rapper husband JJC Skillz said SceneOne TV was created with the aim of offering audiences “Nollywood at their finger tips.”

The new app is available through Android and IOS stores.

Akindele has featured in and produced a number of Nollywood movies, including Industreet, Jenifa’s Diary and A Trip to Jamaica.

Jenifa’s Diary gets 15th entry

Popular Nigerian comedy series Jenifa’s Diary has been renewed for a 15th season.

Funke Akindele

Created by and starring Nigerian actress Funke Akindele, the show centres on a village girl who relocates to the city of Lagos as she attempts to achieve success.

The new run will hit screens soon, with production already concluded. It will air on DStv channel 253, IrokoTV, Sceneone TV, GOtv channel 92/192 and StarTimes channel 109.

Jenifa’s Diary also stars Falz as Segun, Omotunde Adebowale as Adaku, Tobi Makinde as Timini, Ugwu Jacinta as Kiki and Joy Nice as Pelumi.
