According to Qube Cinema, Brown is joining the team to rapidly expand the firm’s presence in Africa and develop its digital distribution business, Qube Wire, across the continent.

“His industry experience and understanding of the region will make him an asset to the Qube Wire team,” the Chennai-based outfit said.

Brown added: “I envision a valuable partnership with Qube Wire, a distinguished leader in the cinema industry. Their holistic approach to addressing the significant hurdles in the African cinema operations, through tailored electronic delivery solutions and collaborative studio/operator engagement, harmonises seamlessly with my mission as a cinema consultant and filmmaker.

“Together, we can empower African cinema operators and owners with precisely crafted solutions, thus revolutionising the industry.”

Nigel Dennis, Qube’s senior VP of global sales, said: “We know it’s tough, but Qube is rising to the challenge. Where there is a will, there is a way. We are already offering our service in Ghana, DRC, Djibouti, Mauritius and Reunion Islands. The next countries in the pipeline are Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and South Africa.

“Francis is a talented individual who has already slotted into our team perfectly. We’ll continue, as we always have, to listen to both exhibition and distribution on how we can make their lives easier and act accordingly.”

Ghanaian short Room 5 set for NY festival

Room 5

Room 5, an animated film directed by Ghana’s Francis Yushau Brown, has been selected to be screened at the New York Shorts International Film Festival.

The film is produced by Daty Kaba and tells the story of how patients are treated by nurses when they visit hospital, coupled with a subplot about how most people are afraid of injection.

Brown’s Accra-based production company Animax FYB Studios took to Instagram to  announce: “The Room 5 train is at New York. We got selected at the New York Shorts International Film Festival.”

The news comes after the short took the Best Animation Award at the Africa International Film Festival in 2016 and Best Animation in the Ghana Movie Awards in 2018, while Animax FYB was awarded the Animator of the Year in the Ghana UK Based Achievement Awards.

Animax FYB is also working on a longform animated series called Tutu – The Untold Story of a Kingdom, which tells the story of African ruler Osei Tutu and the rise of the 17th century Ashanti Kingdom located in what is now Ghana.

The New York Shorts International Film Festival is one of the largest showcases of short films in North America and a platform for filmmakers to screen their work and gain recognition in New York City. The festival runs from October 1 to 30.
