Obi Emelonye’s Black Mail to debut in UK

Black Mail stars Nigerian actor OC Ukeje

Award-winning African movie Black Mail, from Nigeria-born, UK-based filmmaker Obi Emelonye (Last Flight to Abuja), will have its premiere in UK cinemas next month.

The film is written, produced and directed by Emelonye, executive produced by Linda Ikenga, Bosun Amao and Amaka Obi-Emelonye and produced by Emelonye’s Manchester-based TNF Studios, as well as Ijebond Entertainment, Bosun Amao Productions and AW Broadcast.

It is being released in the UK in association with distributor Evrit Films and marketed by Screen Nation Media and Spotlight Management.

According to Evrit, Black Mail will receive a UK-wide theatrical release on 26 August on over 100 Cineworld, Odeon and Vue cinema screens. International premieres and theatrical releases are also scheduled for Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon, while a North American acquisition deal is in negotiation with billionaire media mogul Byron Allen’s Freestyle Releasing.

Black Mail was the winner of the 2021 best film award at the African Movie Academy Awards and was voted best film at the British Urban Film Festival (2021).

The film sees a ruthless Russian criminal attempt to exploit a compromised victim in a game of cyber ‘cat and mouse’ that takes everyone to the edge of destruction in a sharply observed, fast-paced thriller, according to the producers.

It tells the story of a celebrated Nigerian actor, played by OC Ukeje, who receives a mysterious email threatening to release a sex tape and demanding a huge ransom be paid in 24 hours. Co-stars include Nicolay Shulik, Tony Richardson, Emma Fletcher and Alessandro Babalola.
