Two Nollywood movies to screen at TIFF

Black Harvest focuses on organ trafficking

Two Nollywood movies have been selected to make their debuts at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), which takes place in the Canadian city from September 7 to 17.

Nigerian filmmaker James Amuta’s neo-noir drama Black Harvest and Genevieve Nnaji’s film adaptation of Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani novel I Do Not Come to You By Chance will both screen at the festival.

Both movies are part of the line-up for TIFF’s centrepiece programme, with 47 titles screening from filmmakers representing 45 countries.

Black Harvest takes viewers into the underworld of illegal organ trafficking and transplant tourism. In the movie, a group of goons-for-hire guarding hostages in a kidnap situation soon discover that their employer’s business isn’t exactly what was advertised, as they find themselves in the same predicament as their victims.

The cast includes Zack Orji, Elvina Baby Ibru, Kelechi Udegbe, Nansy MrsHustle, Tope Olowoniyan, Greg ‘Teddy Bear’ Ojefua, Michael Pankyes John, Olasope Ola and Lavinna Vermaa.

Amuta (Nightfall in Lagos, Collision Course) said on social media: “We invite all industry delegates, international press, distributors, aggregators and all lovers of film to join us in Toronto as we unveil this film that we made with guts and gusto.”

Meanwhile, I Do Not Come to You By Chance is an adaptation of Nigerian author Nwaubani’s debut novel of the same name, published in 2009. It tells the story of a young man burdened with responsibility and the extent to which he goes for his family. It offers an insight into the world of Nigerian email scams and the people behind them.

I Do Not Come to You By Chance is executive produced by Chinny Carter and directed by Ishaya Bello. It stars Paul Nnadiekwe and veteran Blossom Chukwujekwu.
