Berenike Trytsman (aka Berry) from Cape Town has emerged as the winner of season 17 of the South African version of singing competition format Idols.
Out of 15,000 hopefuls, 16 finalists were selected. Berry’s eventual triumph made her an instant millionaire thanks to the prize of a record deal with Kalawa Jazmee Records. She also walked away with a Renault Kiger valued at over R269,000 (US$16,700) and R100,000 in Truworths fashion vouchers.
In addition, she won a Bachelor of Business Administration bursary from Regenesys Business School, valued at over R260,000, R85,000 worth of musical equipment from Yamaha and more.
“I’m feeling absolutely amazing. I didn’t think this would ever happen to me,” said Berry. “I’m blown away by the support from my berries [her fans]. My berries, you are the reason I’m here. Thank you for pushing through the night and getting people to vote.”
Idols SA season 17 aired on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161. The show is based on UK format Pop Idol, which is distributed by Fremantle.
