Basketmouth preps comedy Papa Benji

Popular Nigerian comedian Basketmouth, also known as Bright Okpocha, has released a teaser for his latest comedy, Papa Benji.

Directed by music video director Adasa Cookey, Papa Benji is a web series that follows an industrious Igbo man who owns a pepper soup joint. The show revolves around him and the many other interesting characters that visit.

It is based on Okpocha’s life experiences and encounters, as well as the real-life Papa Benji pepper soup joint in Kirikiri, where the comedian used to live.

Set to debut on December 12 on YouTube, the teaser is from the first episode entitled The Cork and features Nollywood personalities including Basketmouth, Sound Sultan, Real Warri Pikin, Bethel Njoku, Onyebuchi Ojieh and Nedu Wazobia.

Auditions held for Basketmouth comedy

New Showmax original comedy series Ghana Jollof, executive produced by Nigerian comedian Basketmouth (aka Bright Okpocha), has begun auditions.

Aspiring Ghanaian TV stars living in Lagos or Accra aged between 20 and 60 are expected to upload a two-minute video with a monologue of their choice on Instagram with the hashtag #GhanaJollofShowmax, including their name, phone number and location.

Basketmouth, who will also star in the show, said: “Ghanaians are our next-door neighbours and both countries have always been intertwined in both music and movies. I believe in the mutual growth of the entertainment industry for both countries.

“I’m also incredibly passionate about the discovery and promotion of new talent, and with Showmax at the forefront of promoting local African content, it is my belief that we’re set to unleash incredible new talent.”

On the choice of title, he added: “For those wondering why we went with Ghana Jollof, you’ll just have to watch the show and find out.”

The deadline for audition is July 20.

Showmax rolls out with BB spin-offs

MultiChoice Group’s video-on-demand service, Showmax, has launched in Nigeria with two new Big Brother Naija spin-off shows.

The shows, hosted by comedians Basketmouth and Bovi, have been produced exclusively for Showmax.

They are Big Brother Naija Extra View, a 25-minute compilation of unseen footage, and Big Brother Naija Hot Room, a 25-minute satirical commentary on the week’s main drama and action.

The company said: “Showmax Nigeria offers a dedicated slate of Nigerian television shows and movies, international hit series, Hollywood blockbusters and a Big Brother Naija partnership with live streaming and exclusive new BBNaija shows.”

Niclas Ekdahl, CEO of MultiChoice’s Connected Video division, said: “We’re aiming for the sweet spot that other services may have missed. Taking a generic service and taking on a few Nollywood movies won’t cut it, so we’re coming in with a strong mix of up-to-date Nigerian shows, international hits and favourites from across Africa, and now, as something completely new: on-demand and live Big Brother Naija content.”

Other shows to be added on the Showmax service will include Tinsel, The Johnsons, My Flatmates other Nollywood movies, Bollywood shows, telenovelas and shows from Kenya and South Africa.

Naija Stand-Up returns to TV

Nigerian pop-up comedy channel Naija Stand-Up is returning to TV screens.

The 12-hour block will offer a variety of skits and other comedy events from comedians such as Ali Baba, Basketmouth, Bovi and AY on the DStv and GOtv platforms from today until Saturday December 7.

The shows will aired include Ali Baba’s Spontaneity show, Lord of the Ribs (from 2018), AY Live Shows (2016, 2017, 2018), Funny Bone Untamed (2017, 2018), Elvis Poko (2019), MC Shaggy, Acapella and a host of others.

According to Martin Mabutho, chief customer officer at MultiChoice Nigeria, the pop-up channel will get customers ready for more exciting content lined up for the upcoming festive season.

“We received a lot of great reviews when the channel made its debut in April. For the second season, we’ve curated some of the biggest comedy shows out of Naija and packaged them into a 12-hour binge fest for the viewing pleasure of our customers, at no extra cost,” he said.

The shows will be aired on DStv channel 197 and GOtv channel 29 and it will be available on all packages on DStv and select packages on GOtv.
