Golden Boy charms Africa, Eastern Europe

Star TV series Golden Boy is produced by OGM Pictures

East African pay TV operator Azam TV has acquired Turkish drama Golden Boy (249×45’), after a deal with Scandinavia-based distributor Eccho Rights.

Tanzania-based Azam will air the series on its satellite TV platform in its domestic market as well as Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Ghana, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Azam is owned by Bakhresa Group,

The show has also been licensed to Poland’s TVP, Czechia’s Nova TV, Serbia’s Happy TV and Kazakhstan’s Khabar TV, bringing the total number of countries in which the show will air to 100, according to Eccho. It recently returned for its second season in Turkey.

Produced by Istanbul-based prodco OGM Pictures for Turkey’s Star TV, Golden Boy is a family drama about two sisters whose lives change forever when they cross paths with a charming bachelor.

AMC debuts on UK’s Freeview

Africa- and UK-based broadcaster African Movie Channel (AMC) has debuted its flagship channel on the UK’s Freeview television platform.

This launch is via OTT tech company Channelbox on Freeview channel 271 and makes AMC the first Nollywood channel ever to be distributed on the UK’s Freeview platform, according to AMC.

AMC showcases Nollywood movies, along with films from elsewhere in Africa. They include AMC’s own movies from its own production division, AMC Original Productions (AMCOP), and cinema blockbusters for the family.

AMC and sister channel AMC Series are distributed all over sub-Saharan Africa on platforms including StarTimes, StarSat, TopStar, Azam TV, Zuku and Airtel TV. They offer a selection of Africa’s most successful and critically acclaimed movies, TV series, reality productions, talkshows, magazine shows and other shortform content.

Yinka Mayungbo, AMC’s founding director, said: “We launched the first ever Nollywood channel in Europe in 2006. 14 years later, we are back – in time for Lockdown 3! Here’s wishing our audience in Blighty good cheer and a brilliant time watching their favourite Nollywood stars on AMC.”

Azam TV shifts services to Eutelsat 7C

African pay TV operator Azam TV has migrated its video platform from the Eutelsat 7B satellite to Eutelsat 7C, alongside agreeing a multi-year extension of its existing contract and entering an incremental capacity commitment.

Azam TV will utilise Eutelsat 7C to distribute some 120 channels in a mix of standard and high definition across its footprint covering Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Kenya and Rwanda.

Patrice Paquot, Eutelsat’s deputy regional VP of sub-Saharan Africa, said: “We are honoured to continue to partner with Azam, one of our anchor customers at the 7° East position, as it successfully expands its broadcast offer. 7° East has become a new DTH hotspot for Sub-Saharan Africa and a key pay-TV neighbourhood for Eastern Africa with some of the fastest growth rates in the region.”
