Animation du Monde finalists revealed

Three finalists have emerged from the third preliminaries of the inaugural Animation du Monde MIFA pitch competition.

Out of the 13 projects that progressed last week, Natasha Nayo and Lizz Johnson (Message Beats, Ghana); Chekwube Okonkwo (Meet the Igwes, Nigeria); and Selorm Dogoe (JujuCups, Ghana) have made it to the finals, which will be held in Johannesburg in November.

According to a post on the organisation’s Instagram page, the three finalists will each receive a Wacom Intuos M tablet.

“Being one of the strongest rounds of Animation du Monde by the African Animation Network, we can’t congratulate everyone that pitched in enough,” said Animation du Monde MIFA.

The projects that have made it through the third preliminaries of the Animation du Monde MIFA pitch competition have been revealed at the Accra Animation Film Festival, which is taking place this week.

Selected from a pool of more than 20 submissions, those to have made it through to the next round are: Nigeria’s Seriki Toluwalase for The Tuck; Emmanuel Dankyl (I Think I Might Have Killed My Roommate, Ghana); Matthew Omo-Aibangbee (Meet the Igwes, Nigeria); Boris Kpadenou (Lovemaker, Togo); Omotunde Akiode (Orombo, Nigeria); Louis Appiah (Tales of Nazir, Ghana); Selorm Dogoe (JujuCups, Ghana); Sitraka Randriamahaly (Mora Mora, Madagascar); Joanne Nyathama Waithaka (Nashami, Kenya); Natasha Nayo and Lizz Johnson (Message Beats, Ghana); Kabelo Maaka (The Fam, South Africa); and Somtochukwu Ajuluchukwu (Orange City, Nigeria).

Three projects from the above will be selected to compete at the final competition in November.

The Accra Animation Film Festival is aimed at supporting and promoting animators in Africa, offering them the opportunity to showcase their work.

“In my experience as an animation producer, as well as working with creatives and animators across Africa, it is imperative to know your project’s ins and outs. Too many animation projects start out as passion projects and never see completion because the director or the team involved have lost track of the initial framework along the way,” said festival founder Diana Rosu.

“Annecy and Animation du Monde are setting the bar high for animation industries that are still malleable and are now defining themselves, and that’s an excellent way to ensure they become competitive on the global market.”

Aimed at growing the animation ecosystem in Africa and connecting local animators to professionals in other continents, Animation du Monde and the Accra Animation Film Festival provide creatives with opportunities to have their short film project, series concept or feature-length movie seen by the world while it is still in its incubation phase.
