StarTimes to crown Queen of Nollywood
StarTimes TV has partnered with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) to exclusively broadcast forthcoming reality show Queen of Nollywood.
The “acting competition” series aims to highlight Nigerian culture in the entertainment industry and will feature 36 female contestants, representing each state in the country.
The participants will compete in various activities as they are whittled down to a top six who stand a chance to win prizes including cash, a one-year film contract and the chance to become a brand ambassador of the show. The top three will be sponsored to travel to the European country of their choice.
According to Frank Ikegwuonu, creator of the show and president of the Nollywood Executives & Leadership Awards, the activities will include talent hunts and impressions. “These contestants will be expected to mimic four of Nollywood’s most outstanding actresses – Mercy Johnson, Patience Ozokwor, Funke Akindele and Queen Nwokoye,” he said.
“The show is an acting competition where every contestant must have a basic knowledge of the Nigerian culture and language. Each contestant representing each state will have to study the norms and values peculiar to the state she is representing.”
StarTimes Nigeria chief operating officer Tunde Aina said the show portrays local arts and culture positively, with the company planning to “use the network’s public relations machinery to promote and publicise the show in line with best practices in the broadcasting industry.”
He added: “The show aims at displaying our cultural values as a people as well as discovering budding talents that will continue to perform excellently in the entertainment industry.”
Although the organisers are yet to disclose exactly when the show will commence, it is scheduled to begin airing next month.
In partnership with NTA, China’s Star Communications launched StarTimes TV in Nigeria in 2010. The pay TV company currently operates nationwide.
StarTimes recently reduced the rates of its Classic bouquet, dropping the price from N2,600 to N1,900 for all of September and October. Channels in the Classic package include EbonyLife TV, Fox, ST Nollywood Plus and Discovery Family.
