Sky UK takes Kukua toon Super Sema

Sky in the UK has picked up three seasons of African animated superhero series Super Sema from UK-based kids’ entertainment firm Cake following the show’s success on YouTube.
Produced by London- and Nairobi-based female-led studio Kukua and exec produced by Oscar-winning actor Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave, Black Panther, Us), the series will launch on Sky on August 14.
Also available on the Sky Kids app, the series is written by four-time Bafta winner Claudia Lloyd (Charlie & Lola) and follows a 10-year-old African superhero and her twin brother as they protect their African village from a villainous artificial intelligence robot with the help of science and technology.
The series launched as a YouTube Original in 2021, running alongside science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM) educational videos that explore the science behind the series with experiments and crafts.
Cake picked up the international distribution rights to the series in August 2022.
