South African science fiction horror series Pulse has been acquired by streaming service BET+ in the US from Amcomri-owned Abacus Media Rights (AMR).

The 6×60’ series tells the story of an electromagnetic pulse that disables a secure building and disrupts the bio-electric signals in everyone’s minds, trapping a group of video game designers and turning each floor into a psychotic battlefield.

The cast includes Tarryn Wyngaard (Raised By Wolves, The Tree), Thapelo Mokoena (Trackers, Nothing For Mahala, Bulletproof), Carel Nel (Raised By Wolves, Grant, Roots), Sven Ruygrok (Spud, Zulu) and Earl Wan (Just Mates, Coronation Street).

The series was written by Stephen R Clarke, produced by Media Musketeers in the UK and South Africa, and was executive produced by Steve Lanning.

It was filmed in Mauritius and created by the Oscar-, Palme d’Or- and Bafta-winning VFX team that worked on films such as Skyfall, the Harry Potter franchise, Fargo, The Dark Knight Rises, Kick-Ass, The Bourne Ultimatum and Tomb Raider.

Andy Docherty, managing partner at Media Musketeers, said: “We couldn’t be happier for this atypical, modern story to have found such a fantastic home in the US. We hope BET+’s audience will enjoy the first African show of its kind, which is a showcase for the talent that came together under the constraints of lockdown to deliver something completely new and fresh from the continent.”

Jonathan Ford, managing director at AMR, added: “We are very pleased to announce what we expect to be the first sale of many for this series. Pulse is an entertaining, complex hybrid of sci-fi thriller and horror which uniquely combines to create a unique and exciting drama.”

Pulse will launch on BET+ on August 18.
