Reyka, My Cartoon Friend get SAFTA nods
The nominees for the 16th edition of the South African Film & Television Awards (SAFTAs) have been announced, with drama series Reyka and kids’ show My Cartoon Friend among those up for prizes.
This year’s theme is Frame the Future, with the awards aiming to celebrate creativity, innovation and the resilience of the local industry as well as the excellence of South African film and television talent.
The nominees selected in various categories range from best drama to best telenovela, best TV comedy, best actor, best actress and best children’s programme, among others.
The nominees for best drama are Reyka (Quizzical Pictures, MNet), Slot (Marche Media, Kyknet), DAM (Picture Tree International, Showmax) and 4 Mure (Marche Media, Kyknet), while the best telenovela nominees are The Wife (Stained Glass TV, Showmax), Diepcity (Black Brain Pictures, Mzansi Magic) and The River (Tshedza Pictures, 1Magic).
The best TV comedy nominees are G.I.L (Penguin Films, Kyknet), How to Ruin Christmas: The Funeral (Burnt Onion Productions, Netflix) and Tali’s Baby Diary (Sketchbook Studios, Showmax). In the best children’s programme category, My Cartoon Friend (Old Fashioned Youngin), Hectic On 3 (Trace Studios) and Siyaya – Come Wild With Us (Francois Odendaal Productions) are up for awards.
Makhosazana Khanyile, CEO of the National Film & Video Foundation, which organises the SAFTAs, said: “Last year, we faced our greatest challenge ever post-Covid. This year, we celebrate the connectedness that helped us get through, while actively promoting optimism within our local industry.
“With the release of this year’s nominees, we are looking forward to a remarkable show that will showcase the creative innovation that our local industry has continued to display despite the circumstances that have been faced.”
The awards ceremony will be held on September 2 and 3 as a simulcast on SABC 3 (DStv 193) and on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161).
