Real Housewives franchise expands in SA

African pay TV operator Multichoice and its South African broadcaster M-Net are expanding the local version of The Real Housewives franchise with the commission of The Real Housewives of Gqeberha, the fifth South African version of the NBCUniversal format.

Set in the city renowned for its stunning coastlines, the new series will premiere on Multichoice and M-Net’s entertainment channel 1Magic on February 3. It is produced by GOAT Originals in collaboration with format owner NBCUniversal. The Real Housewives of Durban is also returning for season three on Multichoice’s SVoD platform Showmax on February 1, produced by Let It Rain Films.

The Real Housewives format has been adapted locally more than 20 times around the world over the past 16 years. This number includes several based in African cities, the format having successfully been produced in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria, Lagos, Abuja and Nairobi. The US franchise began on Bravo channel in 2006 with The Real Housewives of Orange County.
