Netflix adds Africa’s Atlantique
Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to award-winning African film Atlantique from French-Senegalese director Mati Diop.
Atlantique stars Mame Bineta Sane as Ada, a woman whose lover leaves Dakar on a boat in search of a better life in Spain after failing to receive pay following a long construction job.
The film won the Grand Prix at the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival, with Diop becoming the first black woman to receive the honour.
The acquisition is part of Netflix’s strategy to ramp up its content from Africa.
