MultiChoice to double original content
MultiChoice’s content chief Nicola van Niekerk has revealed her programming wishlist for 2024 and the latest developments in the company’s “Africa-first” coproduction strategy.
African pay TV group MultiChoice has set itself the task of doubling the 6,500 hours of home-grown content it produces each year within the next three years, with an emphasis on ‘hyperlocal’ programming for the company’s 23.5 million subscribers.
Coupled with the recent announcement that the group will relaunch its streamer Showmax in February this year – fortified with a slate of new series and specials – MultiChoice is very much in the market for programming right now.
“The content industry here is certainly going through a boom period; it’s never been stronger,” said Nicola van Niekerk, head of premium content and coproductions at MultiChoice. “Remember, Africa has the youngest population of all the continents, with 70% of the population under 30 years of age, so it’s a very exciting market to work in.”
