Joburg Film Festival line-up revealed

This year’s Joburg Film Festival (JFF) will showcase more than 60 selected films from South Africa, Tunisia, Brazil, Seoul, USA, Japan, Morocco and others.

The JFF takes place in the South African city from January 31 to February 5.

It will feature a range of audience and industry initiatives, including the JBX Content Market and JFF Industry programme, which will be held on February 1 and 2 at the Sandton Convention Centre and The Theatre on the Square at Nelson Mandela Square.

The JBX market will be positioned as an extension of the JFF, taking place alongside it as a a B2B in-person platform engineered to fast-track the transformation of Africa’s audiovisual industries through market-access opportunities and tributes to talent, entrepreneurs and luminaries who are propelling these industries forward.

Content being offered to buyers will include a diverse selection of finished titles made in Africa and adaptation rights to scripted and unscripted programmes.

The JFF Industry Programme, meanwhile, will focus on African stories and storytellers, as well as the new platforms and technologies that are providing new spaces and opportunities for African content to go global.

There will also be a series of conversations, panel discussions and masterclasses.

Day one will begin with a session titled Sustainable Business Models in Film and TV: Cost Plus versus Co-Production, followed by The Rise of Documentary, hosted by Steps Generation Africa.

One day two, there will be an interactive session called Nigeria and South Africa Co-Production, focusing on the importance of collaboration with the Nigerian industry, in partnership with the NFVF and the Nigerian Film Corporation. There will also be a masterclass with Wole Soyinka titled Intersection Between Technology and Story.

Another session tagged Cross Atlantic Collaboration: Co-Producing with the USA will be hosted and moderated by Locations Africa and will discuss the importance of international coproductions.

The industry programme will also have sessions focusing on women in film and highlighting female directors, as well as a session presented by SWIFT (Safety for Women in Film and Television/Intimacy) and Safety Contact Officers.

Now in its fifth year, the JFF curates and showcases of African and international films while providing young talent and filmmakers with opportunities for development, training, skills transfer and networking, according to its organisers.
