The premises of Abia state’s popular cable television network Communication Trends Limited (CTL) have been gutted by fire.

The inferno is alleged to have started from the power generator room before spreading rapidly and setting ablaze the rest of the building. All told, the fire has caused an estimated N150m in damages, including three transmitters and a mast. No lives were lost.

Staff of nearby communications companies Vision Africa Radio and Broadcasting Corporation of Abia State tried to quench the fire with a fire extinguisher as soon as they noticed the smoke. Realising it could not be easily contained, they then alerted the Abia State Fire Service in Umuahia.

Arriving early, the State’s Fire Service was able to control the fire before it extended to neighbouring buildings.

It is also alleged that the staff of CTL, who were looking after the office where the fire began, were absent. The cause of the inferno remains unknown but an investigation is ongoing.

Subscribers of CTL fear they would be disconnected from watching their favourite programmes due to the incident. CTL, which operates the Trend TV platform, is the go-to choice for the lower and middle classes in Abia. The company controls 30% of cable TV viewers in the state, competing with other cable TV providers like GOtv and StarTimes TV.
