Idols SA to bow out after S19
The upcoming 19th season of South African talent show Idols SA will be its last, it was announced this week.
News of the hit show’s cancellation was revealed on Sunday by the producers, who said the “farewell season” will be broadcast later in the year.
The show is based on the UK format Pop Idol, created by former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller and distributed internationally by Fremantle. It has also aired for 20 seasons in the US as American Idol, as well as 55 other local adaptations around the world.
Since the South African version started in 2002 on MultiChoice-owned channel M-Net, it has produced stars like Yanga Sobetwa, Luyolo Yiba, Zama Khumalo, Berry Trytsman and Thapelo Molomo. It now airs on M-Net’s sister channel Mzansi Magic.
The new season will be hosted by South African rapper and radio host ProVerb while the judges will be Somizi Mhlongo, JR and Thembi Seete. Online auditions will begin on February 12. For more details, click here. https://www.idolssa.net
