DFMI Business Lab 2023 participants

The Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) has announced the 35 participants from 22 African countries who have been selected for the third edition of the DFMI Business Lab.

Those selected will embark on a 12-week programme focused on fostering and equipping film and TV producers with essential skills to participate in the international marketplace.

The DFMI Business Lab will focus on modules including financial management, business administration, intellectual property and entertainment law, distribution and coproduction. These modules will be led by seasoned professionals from the film, TV and creative industries hailing from Burkina Faso, Canada, France, Kenya, South Africa and the US.

Magdalene Reddy, director of DFMI, said: “The Lab is now in its third year. We would like to thank the DW Akademie [of Germany] for their continued investment into capacity-building on the African continent.

“In addition to providing filmmakers with the expertise to expand their film career, the Lab has created a sense of community between the producers, inviting them into a peer-to-peer support system where they are free to share opportunities and learnings as they engage in the film industry.”

The participants include Abdifatah Abdi (Somalia), Boi Beatrice Kenneh (Sierra Leone), Boris Fredy Agblo (Benin) and Doreen R Kilimbe (Tanzania). From South Africa are Chelsea Art, Duwayne Murphy, François Maree, Khangelani Mtyhalela, Khanyisile Zondi, Lauren Scholtz, Madelize De Lange, Ndumiso Gumede and Ndumiso Gumede.

From Nigeria come Emil Garuba, Omoyefe Majoroh and Timilehin Adewoye, and from Egypt, Manar El-Zohery and Muhammad Taymour. Nduruka Njoroge and Sally Ngoiri are from Kenya.

Others include Faith Riyano and Rugare Ponde (Zimbabwe), Faye Binetou (Senegal), Ghislaine Kanga (Ivory Coast), Gopalen Parthiben Chellapermal (Mauritius), Habtamu Mekonen (Ethiopia), Ian Tarimo (Tanzania), Ibtissem Labidi (Tunisia), Limbani Maxwell Teputepu (Malawi), Muhannad Lamin (Libya), Naseeba Bagalaaliwo (Uganda), Oueslati Ager (Algeria), Oularé Momo (Guinea), Paul Wilo (Zambia), Pingdewinde Tiemtore (Burkina Faso), Rugare Ponde (Zimbabwe) and Zineb Chafchaouni Moussaoui (Morocco).

The DFMI Business Lab programme is offered in collaboration with DW Akademie from German broadcaster Deutsche Welle and receives support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation & Development. The online programme is scheduled to start in October.
