The fourth season of South African unscripted series Big Brother Mzansi, based on the pioneering Dutch format that started the reality TV boom in the late 1990s, is set to premiere next month.

Lawrence Maleka

The show is produced by global production group Banijay and Johannesburg- and Lagos-based Red Pepper Pictures for MultiChoice-owned channel Mzansi Magic. Its host will be South African actor, host and presenter Lawrence Maleka.

The Big Brother mansion will bring together contestants who will engage in various fun games and form strategic alliances that lead to unexpected conflicts and drama.

Shirley Adonisi, MultiChoice’s director of local entertainment channels, said the fourth season of the show would be “a disruption of the norm.”

She added: “It means setting a new bar, being the most memorable season for disrupting and breaking away from what is expected. Viewers are familiar with what Big Brother is all about and they know what to expect every season – or so they think. With this season, we are messing with those perceptions and blowing their expectations out of the water.”

Big Brother Mzansi executive producer Natalie Bleksley, from Red Pepper Pictures, said: “You may think you know how Big Brother operates, but season four has more than just a few twists and turns that will keep viewers guessing.

“The format is also being enhanced by adding new game mechanics… nothing is predictable, and [narrator] Biggie is here to shake things up, building on the elements that viewers love, i.e. Saturday Night Parties, Friday Night Games.”

Big Brother Mzansi debuts on January 21, 2024, at 18.00 on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161.
