Amazon Freevee scores SA rugby doc
Amazon’s AVoD streaming service Freevee has picked up documentary The Moment: How Sports Changed the World, which highlights the success of the South African team in the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
The documentary will be available on Amazon Freevee in the UK from August 25, shortly before the start of the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France in September — nearly 28 years after the film’s events took place.
The film shows how, with apartheid behind them and the South African nation in the midst of a transitional government led by Nelson Mandela, sport emerged as a unifying tool in a country that was profoundly divided both politically and culturally.
Four-time Emmy winner Tom Jennings (Diana: In Her Own Words, Apollo: Missions to the Moon) directed and executive produced the doc, while two-time Emmy winner Bernadette McDaid (Stephen Spielberg’s Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero) was also an exec producer.
The documentary was produced by Red Bull Studios, best known for Bafta-winning documentary The Real Mo Farah and Emmy-winning The Alpinist. Amcomri Entertainment-owned Abacus Media Rights is the international distributor for the film.
