US producers prep Jane the Virgin SA
LA-based producer Alta Global Media has joined forces with US studio Propagate to develop comedy-drama Jane the Virgin in South Africa.
The local-language, 12-episode romantic dramedy is being adapted for territories in sub-Saharan Africa.
The new series is based on the show starring Gina Rodriguez which ran for five seasons on The CW in the US.
Ben Silverman, Propagate’s chairman and co-CEO, originally took the format to the US from Venezuela and served as exec producer on the show.
South Africa’s Mandlakayise Dube (Tsotsi), known for most recently helming the hit Netflix film Silverton Siege, is on board to direct the pilot.
The South African adaptation will follow a proud 22-year-old Zulu girl who is accidentally inseminated by her gynaecologist.
