The number of SVoD subscriptions in Africa will reach 18 million by 2029, up from 8 million at end-2023, according to UK analysis firm Digital TV Research.

Despite the fast growth, SVoD penetration will remain low, with only 7.7% of TV households paying for at least one subscription by 2029.

Netflix will have 7.5 million subscribers by 2029, adding 3.4 million from end-2023. Second-placed Showmax will have 4.4 million paying subscribers by 2029, which is nearly three million more than 2023.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s Prime Video will have 3.1 million subscribers by 2029, followed by Disney+ at 1.5 million and Apple TV+ at 251,000. Other platforms combined will reach 1.1 million subscriptions.

Digital TV Research recently forecast that global SVoD subscriptions will increase by 400 million by 2028 to reach a total of 1.76 billion, with Netflix leading the way in this worldwide expansion by amassing a total of 277 million customers.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “The SVoD sector in Anglophone Africa is evolving into a battle between Netflix and local player Showmax. Rich in local content and sports rights, Showmax now has access to NBCUniversal, Sony Pictures and HBO content.”
