African Queens: Njinga comes to Netflix
In honour of Black History Month, celebrated in February, a new documentary series called African Queens: Njinga will premiere on global streaming platform Netflix next month.
Set to become an anthology series exploring the lives of prominent and iconic African queens each season, the first season will trace the rise and reign of Queen Njinga of Angola, amid family betrayal and political rivalries.
Njinga was a fearless 17th century warrior queen of Ndongo and Matamba who earned a reputation for her blend of political and diplomatic skill with military prowess and became an icon of resistance.
African Queens is produced by Jada Pinkett Smith and will debut on February 15.
“I have teamed with Netflix and Nutopia to produce a docuseries about the life of one of my favourite African queens, Queen Njinga. I hope you will tune in to honour the legacy of this powerful warrior queen whose story was almost lost and forgotten,” said Pinkett Smith.
