African films nominated at Annecy
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France has selected two African short films that will be in competition during the June event.
Scheduled to take place from June 14 to 19, the event will include I Am Chuma, from South Africa’s Clea Mallinson and Wendy Spinks, and Room 5 from Ghana’s Francis Yushau Brown.
I Am Chuma is produced by Zeropoint Studios and is based on the life story of street artist Chuma Somdaka. It follows a young disabled lesbian who finds herself living rough on a bench for three years. She deals with suppressed traumas of a gang rape via street art.
Room 5, meanwhile, is produced by Daty Kaba and tells the story of how patients are treated by nurses when they visit the hospital, coupled with a sub-plot of how most people are afraid of injections.
Brown’s studio Animaxfyb took to Instagram to make this announcement; “Hey guys! Our short animated film ROOM 5 just got nominated at Annecy Festival in the Perspective short films category. We can’t keep calm at the studio.”
