MultiChoice Talent Factory unveils film podcast

The MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) has launched a podcast series about filmmaking and entertainment titled This is Africa.

The series is an informal, interactive and conversational programme that celebrates and promotes talent, innovation and business opportunities within the film industry.

It is hosted by MTF Academy alumni Nikita Neo Mokgware and Serena ‘Serene’ Mmifinyana, who pitched the series under their production company N&M Productions. They will give their best takes on what’s hot and not and give a much-needed look at entertainment in Africa.

The duo were part of the MTF class of 2019 from the Southern African hub and were writers on the film The Painting, which aired on Zambezi Magic in September 2019 and is now available on Showmax.

“This is the perfect platform for young Africans to start tapping in both as listeners and content creators,” said Mokgware.

“If there’s anything that the pandemic has shown us it’s that there’s more room to create, inform and entertain than ever before. There are so many new shows, films, collaborations and productions happening in the creative film and TV industry in Africa, and we can’t wait to dive in and really unpack them.”

Mmifinyana added: “This is Africa will be the perfect opportunity to really sink your teeth into popular African film and TV culture. We want to start building a culture of engaging, appreciating and analysing the work that we as Africans do in our industry, and there’s no better way than creating such a forum than through this series. The continent has a lot to offer, so let’s talk about it.”

The podcast will feature special guests ranging from industry veterans to emerging creators.

MultiChoice academy unveils student films

Two films produced by the first intake of the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) academy are airing on television this month.

Esther Beukes, Roger Gertze, Toivo Ashivudhi, Stanley Simataa and Sally Jason

The Painting was broadcast on October 18 at 21.00 and Savannah Skies will air on October 25 at 21.00 on DStv’s Zambezi Magic channel 162.

The 20 students of the class of 2018 underwent a grueling interview process and hail from seven countries within southern Africa: Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Stanley Simataa, minister of Information and communication technology in Namibia, where three of the students come from, said: “The interest exhibited by MultiChoice in developing Africa’s creative industry and the willingness the business shows is a key endeavour that will harness the potential for growth within the Namibian film industry, whilst showing positive economic contribution through job creation, cultural transformation and social development.”

Roger Gertze, MD of MultiChoice Namibia, said: “It was rewarding for me to see how determined and aspirational our Namibians were when they shared their experiences with our 2019 intake and we are proud of Esther Beukes, Toivo Ashivudhi and Sally Jason for the wonderful stories they were able to tell through the two showcased films.”
