Play Network to remake Diamond Ring

Nigerian production company Play Network Studios has acquired the intellectual property rights to remake Diamond Ring, the classic Nollywood movie from 1998.

Charles Okpaleke

The thriller, directed by Tade Ogidan, tells the story of a young, spoiled child who is sent to university by his parents and later a gang while on campus. It stars Richard Mofe Damijo, Teju Babyface, Sola Sobowale and Bukky Ajayi.

“We’ve just acquired the intellectual property rights to this Nollywood classic, and we can’t be happier. This would be a remake and not a sequel. This might probably be the last movie under the Play Network Nostalgic collection. Coming soon to your screens,” said Charles Okpaleke, CEO of Play Network Africa, parent company of Play Network Studios.

The production company was also behind Nigerian movies such as Living in Bondage: Breaking Free (2019), which was exec produced by Okpaleke, as well as Nollywood remakes Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story and Nneka The Pretty Serpent.

The Delivery Boy and Light in the Dark will premiere on May 14 and 18 respectively and Anchor Baby starts on May 20. Play Network’s award-winning feature film Living in Bondage: Breaking Free will also make its debut this month.

The Delivery Boy is an award-winning thriller written and directed by cinematographer Adekunle Nodash Adejuyigbe, which tells the story of an orphaned boy who runs into a young prostitute on a fated night. It stars Jammal Ibrahim and Jemima Osunde.

Light in the Dark is directed by Ekene Som Mekwunye. It follows a couple who struggle to mend their marriage after a terrifying home invasion and stars Nollywood actors including Rita Dominic, Kalu Ikeagwu, Joke Silva and Bimbo Ademoye.

Anchor Baby is another thriller, this time produced and directed by Lonzo Nzekwe. It follows the struggle of a Nigerian couple who defy deportation orders and go into hiding to secure their unborn child’s US citizenship and stars Omoni Oboli and Sam Sarpong.

Living in Bondage: Breaking Free is a sequel to the Chris Obi Rapu directed 1992 thriller Living in Bondage. Written by Nicole Asinugo and CJ Obasi and directed by Ramsey Nouah, the movie follows Nnamdi, whose quest for the lavish life takes him down the same questionable path as his father. It features Kenneth Okonkwo, Bob-Manuel Udokwu and Kanayo O Kanayo.

Netflix, which plans to take on more than 50 new titles, recently commissioned an original dance drama series called Jiva!, produced by Cape Town production house Blue Ice Africa.
