Content rules at C3 Africa Network

The third C3 Africa Network creative content conference gets under way

Nigerian content market C3 Africa Network held its third creative content conference at the Genesis Deluxe Cinema in Lekki, Lagos yesterday.

In attendance were industry leaders and Nigerian and international filmmakers. Various panel sessions highlighted key issues and debated how African content can be improved and distributed globally.

The first panel session was entitled Exporting African Culture and involved Ope Ajayi, VP of Genesis Cinema; Ghanaian animator Francis Brown; UK-based professor of film Florence Ayisi; and South African filmmaker Dumi Gumbi.

The panellists agreed there has to be more divergence of content in Africa, other than the usual comedy shows. “Make films that can have a global appeal and are in our indigenous languages in order to preserve our culture,” Ajayi urged.

The second session looked at the distribution of content and the panellists were Damola Layonu, operations support manager at Film One Distribution; Ngozi Aderibigbe from law firm Jackson, Etti & Edu; and Tunde Onakoya from Iflix. Creating content that can sell outside the country of origin was the biggest concern during the session.

The third session discussed the impact of the digital revolution and included Olatubosun Alake, general manager of My-Film House; Dennis Igwebuike, director for YouTube channel Aforevo; Dami Dawson, content director at LITV; and Ngozi Okoli from Iroko Partners.

This debate addressed VoD platforms and what particular features they look out for when it comes to content.

The final session looked at funding and coproduction in Nollywood. Moderating was Amaka Nwosu and the panel members were Cynthia Nwuka, creative director at BOI and Simphiwe Ngcobo from Kwazul Natal Commissions.

Ngcobo said that for producers to have creative content, they must have collaborative partnerships. “Producers should produce for the global market and not for local consumption alone,” added Nwuka.

Linda Ikeji TV calls for comic content

Video streaming service Linda Ikeji TV (LITV) is looking for reality TV stars, original comedy skits and home videos.

Linda Ikeji

The service, which launched this month, has a number of exclusive content and original reality TV shows but is seeking more interesting, engaging and innovative content.

LITV has announced it aims to buy home videos made by individuals. According to the company, those random incidents that happen to people everyday may be worth sharing, and if it is considered to be good content, it will be purchased.

“Some of those hilarious, weird, unbelievable moments are probably just sitting in your phone, doing nothing, or you don’t bother to film them. What if you can be paid for them?” said Linda Ikeji, CEO of LITV.

“It can be an incredible moment with your child, a funny moment with your partner, a weird incident with your colleague, lighthearted moment with siblings or friends, anything at all that you capture at home and think others might like to watch.”

Comedians will not be left out, as the company is looking for fresh and relatable content with laugh-out-loud moments. However, such comedy skits must be at least three minutes long.

LITV is known for its original reality TV shows. Now it is on the look-out for more reality stars to feature on its channel.

Interested individuals can contact LITV on [email protected].

LITV continues to offer premium and engaging content on its app. Its programmes include Life Lessons with Betty Irabor, Oyinbo Wives of Lagos, King Tonto, Gidi Girls and Magodo Wives. It also plans to begin airing local and international TV drama series soon.

Linda Ikeji TV to debut web channel

Nigerian blogger and web video producer Linda Ikeji is set to debut her eponymous online TV channel Linda Ikeji TV (LITV) next month.

Linda Ikeji

Ikeji, the 37-year-old CEO of LITV, announced that the online version of the Linda Ikeji TV network is set to launch on May 22. The channel will also debut on pay TV platform DStv later this year.

According to Ikeji, LITV aims to be the ‘Netflix of Africa,’ which is why the network will arrive online before its debut on pay TV.

“Despite the fact we are going to have a DSTV channel, having an online version of our platform was very important to me, mostly for our potential costumers who don’t live in Nigeria and have no access to cable in Nigeria,” she said.

“Bringing our amazing content to consumers all over the world, instead of being restricted only to Nigeria, was important to me. We are starting with our Nigerian content but plan to expand to other African countries. We are hoping to be to Africa what Netflix is to the world.”

Ikeji added that over the past 18 months she had spent “at least half-a-billion Naira of my own money,” or around US$1.4m, to create the channel. LITV will be offering subscribers original content such as reality shows, drama series, sitcoms, movies and talkshows.

Titles will include Oyinbo Wives of Lagos, Gidi Girls, Ajegunle with Love, Double Trouble, How Well Do You Know Me, Igwe Must Hear This, Report Card and The Paranormal House on Brown Road.
