South African VoD service CineMagic has joined the MTN Play and Vodacom Video Play mobile content platforms.

The service, which was launched recently by content licensing company Exceptional Rights, offers shortform director-driven movies, series and documentaries each between five and 30 minutes long.

Joanne Raphael-Katz at Exceptional Rights said there is an unmet consumer demand for short movies that display beautifully on mobile.

“The support from the mobile networks recognises the confidence they have in CineMagic’s snackable little movies and the fact that South African mobile users want video designed for their cellular devices and not for traditional TV broadcast,” she said.

The VoD service has plans to expand its presence into other Sub-Saharan countries following a settling period and it has already secured a broad range of French shortform content for French-speaking African territories.

“This is true curated content because there are very few movie studios globally dedicated to the production of short movies and series. This means we proactively procure content from individual companies, filmmakers, producers and artists, and pre-Covid we also actively visited African and European film festivals to source short movies,” added Raphael-Katz.
